I work in the Film/Television visual effects industry; have done some teaching, and am currently experimenting with rendering fractals and other kinds of digital art in "real time" using openGL based programs like Tom Beddard's web application "Fractal Lab". I work on Ubuntu Linux workstations, and support free open source software.

I'm, on a hiatus from my own art for a few weeks. I've had to leave my beloved computers at home until I'm settled into my new residence in Auckland. I'll be working as a lecturer at the Media Design School, teaching "3d" computer graphics until the end of the year. The school's staff is an amazing collection of artists, film makers, designers, and engineers. So many brilliant people to learn from...

'Generative' Art

Most of the pieces in this collection are "generative art"; imagery created with the use of fractal and other algorithms such as "Strange Attractors" (I love that name).
When creating imagery using fractal tools, the process is a mixture of intent (what do I want to visualize), and the exploration of nearly infinite mathematical structures. With experience you learn some of the secrets of the fractal you are exploring, so that you have a clue where to look for the imagery you wish to generate. Often the fractal will tell you a story that captures your imagination, resulting in an image born of spontaneity.
